What is surgical orthodontics?
Surgical orthodontics (also known as orthognathic surgery) corrects severe jaw irregularities leading to improved facial appearance as well as improvements in a patient's ability to chew, speak and breathe. These orthodontic treatments not only align the teeth with braces, but also coordinate treatment with orthognathic surgery to address the jaw disharmony.
Who needs surgical orthodontics?
Dr. Eisen will consider surgical orthodontic treatment for adult patients with improper bites and those with facial aesthetic concerns that are too pronounced to be addressed by orthodontic treatment alone. Jaw growth is usually completed by around age 16 for girls and 18 for boys. While the majority of growth should be completed before jaw surgery is performed, the pre-surgical tooth movements can often begin a year prior to these ages. Dr. Eisen partners with leading oral surgeons to help ensure a successful treatment approach.
